Happy Birthday to Me!

Maybe that sounded a bit self-absorbed.

As much as I love celebrating birthdays, and even my own, I actually don’t like being the center of attention when it is my birthday.  Which seems contradictory.

Contradictory like how I like making birthday cakes, but dislike being sung to when it’s time to eat my own.

Strange, huh?  Oh well.  I love a good party, but find it awkward being in the limelight.

Anyhow, what you really want to know about is the cake that I baked for my birthday.

I know I know.  My birthday should be the day that I shouldn’t have to bake a cake.  But, the husband got me the cutest cake cookbook ever for, well, my birthday!  I knew that I had to bake something out of that book and I figured my birthday was a good enough excuse to do so.

Earlier this week I saw a sale for blackberries.  I decided to buy a couple boxes to make blackberry jam.  Not that I really eat jam, but I thought that instead of hiding my fruit inside a baked good, I’d let the fruit itself shine.  But then I saw a recipe for jam cake.. and that original idea went out of the window.  🙂

I don’t particularly like the taste of blackberries.  I find them a bit sour.  But in a jam (with lots of sugar, of course), they taste just wonderful!

Oh yes, I should tell you what I made.  Blackberry Jam Cake with Caramel Chocolate Ganache.

Doesn’t that sound wonderful?  🙂

First off!  Making Caramel Chocolate GanacheP1170579P1170584.

Warm buttery caramel poured over semi-sweet chocolate chips = Amazing ganache.  Lemme tell you.  The kitchen smelled wonderful.  Beautiful glossy and rich ganache.  I could probably eat it drizzled over everything.  🙂

Aren’t those layers wonderful?  I’ve started to notice this 3-layer cake trend.  Or maybe it was always there and I was just oblivious.  I only have 2 8-inch pans.  And then I decide to bake a beautiful cake that is… 3 layers.  This always causes me to shake my fist that I still haven’t gone and gotten that darn 3rd 8-inch cake pan.  SIGH.   But anyways, that’s my pretty blackberry jam cake with ganache fillings.  I was supposed to also put toasted almonds inbetween…but I forgot.  😦

Beautiful, right?  Gah.  I painstakingly put every toasted almond on there.  hahaha.  I didn’t want to just like mash/throw the almonds on there.  Yeah, I can be particular like that.  My first batch of almonds burned too.  But that’s okay.  The husband likes to eat burnt things (including my burnt baked goods).

It was a beautiful cake that tasted amazing as well.

And if you were wondering… no one sang happy birthday to me.  🙂

Just the way I like it.

The One Day I Shouldn’t Have to Bake a Cake…

Well, one of two days.  One being my wedding day (God willing) and the other being my BIRTHDAY!  🙂

So ironically enough.. I didn’t even get cake on my birthday.  But it’s all good.  Sometimes I really don’t have a sweet tooth and considering how much delicious food I consumed… my poor tummy really didn’t have any room.

I actually ate so much for my birthday that.. I didn’t eat at all the entire next day.  Sick, right?  hahaha.

My birthday festivities actually started the day before brunch with Ms. Kimmie Mark.  We went to Le Petit Jardin.  A cute little restaurant/flower shop.

I got a Spicy Chicken Sandwich with Frites.

Kimmie got Eggs Florentine with Roasted Potatoes.

The next day I went to King’s Road Cafe with Kristin.  It’s such a delicious and cute place right on Ventura.  I’ve passed by it so many times on the way to and back from work, so I was super excited to finally try it!

Doesn’t it look delicious?!  Blackened Ahi Tuna with Grilled Veggies and Mashed Sweet Potatoes.

Kristin got Crab Cake Salad.  It was huge and delicious!

Last but not least, I had dinner with my apartment girls! 🙂  We went to TART.  I LOVE IT. Tart is SO CUTE.  🙂  I also passed by this often driving home from work.  It’s right across the street from the Grove on Fairfax.  Ah.  It is everything I love.  Cute decorations.  Outdoor seating available.  Rustic.  Southern food.  Need I say more?!

All in all.  It was awonderful birthday!  I can’t believe I’m 24. YIKES.

But another year of adventures and failures and blessings and sorrows.  A year of more baking and probably less sleeping and more learning and lots of playing and good times all in all. 🙂

Thanks everyone who made my birthday so special! 🙂

I Like My Friends :)

Well… most of the time. keke.

jk. jk.

I love my friends! 🙂  And since I’ve been so very busy with my many many friends this past week, I haven’t found the time to update!  And so to not overwhelm you, I shall make one long post instead of 3 or 4 multiple posts (wait.. that makes sense right?)… err I mean, I’ll just keep it short and simple. 🙂

Got to hang out with my gal pals from back home (half of the Mag Crew) in Riverside because poor Emily usually has to drive alllll the way to PV to play and Allie and I thought we’d be nice and drive there instead.  I don’t know how she does the drive!  We got to eat yummy food, go shopping, and check up and encourage one another.  🙂

Later on this week was the two day celebration of my friend (Jonathan’s) birthday.  Twas a very celebratory packed two days.  On Thursday, we had dinner at Laurel Tavern in Studio City and late night snack at Crave Cafe in Sherman Oaks.  And on Friday, we had more dinner and drinks at Gyenari in Culver City.  And.. dancing and more drinks (hmm… interesting pattern here.  Like the alliteration?) at The Room in Santa Monica.  Quite delicious food, good company, lots of laughs, plenty of grooving, and hopefully in the end, Jonathan felt VERY LOVED!!

So yeah, only got pictures from Laurel Tavern.  The food was pretty dang yummy.  I think I’ll try stopping by there for lunch some time.  🙂

All right.  That’s all I can handle posting now.  I did have fun on Friday too with my friend, Kimmie, when we visited Joni & Friends with my church.  I find it very exciting and cool and awesome that CCAC is going to start a Disabilities Ministry!  (particularly since it goes along with my line of work–working with autistic children) !!  Kimmie and I were supposed to go to the beach.. but we just ended going to Spumoni in Brentwood and grabbing a late lunch before heading out to the rest of Jon’s birthday celebrations in the evening.

Okay okay.  Two more pictures. 🙂

I will have to update soon again.. I have many cute baked goods/desserts to share with you all! 🙂
